5 common iPhone problems & how to fix them

Experiencing problems with your iPhone (or any smartphone you may use) can be frustrating, time consuming and inconvenient. Having to think about sending your phone away for a repair and parting from it for a day or two can be daunting as we have become so reliant on these devices for day to day life and work. But, we all know that we could manage for a few days without it!

However, some of the most common iPhone problems you can probably fix yourself in just a few short steps. Although you may not be able to fix a cracked screen or scratch on the rear casing, these are usually a result of accidents which cannot be avoided from time to time. But, you can fix issues that are more related with the internal running of the phone and software.

Take a read below about how to fix five of the most common iPhone problems users experience:

1. Excessive battery drainage

Rapid battery drain is one of the most commonly complained about things by Apple users, especially from those with older model devices. Having the 'low battery' notification pop up after just a couple of hours of use can become a hassle and result in your phone constantly having to be plugged in. Often battery drainage issues can come around the time of iOS updates, but below is a list of things to try and reduce battery usage:

  • Complete any pending software update
  • Clear apps regularly that are not being used
  • Turn off Bluetooth, Location Services and Mobile Data when not being used
  • Ensure phone is sleeping automatically after 30 seconds
  • Turn off Auto-Brightness and keep brightness level low
  • Complete factory reset if none of the above resolve the issue

2. Device powering off unexpectedly

If you are experiencing unexpected shutdowns on your iPhone, you are likely needing to resolve a battery calibration issue. Although this isn't always the reason for unexpected shutdowns, this is the most common and is easily fixed with just a few short steps as outlined below:

  • Plug phone into power source and charge to 100%
  • Unplug and let phone drain until it powers off at 0%
  • Leave for 10 minutes before plugging back in and charging to 100%
  • Install any software updates
  • Complete a factory reset if issue is not resolved

3. Cannot connect to Bluetooth or WiFi

A common issue that iPhone users experience is intermittent Bluetooth and WiFi connections. This can be a frustrating issue, especially in the times we are facing now where online meetings and communication has never been more relied on for keeping business, education and even government working. WiFi and Bluetooth are both linked to network settings and sometimes we can accidentally change these or congest the system without even trying. There are a few simple solutions to try and to find a resolutions:

  • 'Forget' network and try to reconnect
  • Restart phone
  • Complete any pending software updates
  • Reset network settings
  • Factory reset phone

4. Touch screen issues

With all iPhone's having touch screen capabilities, this feature has a significant role to play in the everyday use of your device. As touch screens and LCD's become more and more advanced, they are becoming more reliable and running into less issues with lagging and touch sensitivity problems. However, if you are using an older model iPhone, you may be facing touch screen issues. There are some quick things you can try to resolve the issue yourself:

  • Clean screen with microfibre cloth to remove any moisture or debris
  • Remove any screen protector that could be limiting touch sensitivity
  • Ensure phone is up to date to eliminate software issues
  • Restart iPhone
  • Remove any unneeded data and files (photos, videos, downloads) to free up storage space
  • Factory reset iPhone

5. Not able to update to latest iOS

iOS is the powerhouse of the Apple iPhone world and every year multiple updates are released that become available to be downloaded. With this being the case, it is important to keep your iPhone up to date to ensure your phone's security is kept at the top of its game and the speed of your phone is at its maximum (along with many other bonuses). However, some iPhone users can run into issues with being able to download and install the latest iOS update available to them. This can be because of network issues, storage capacity limits and even software errors. This is how to try and overcome the issues:

  • Factory reset iPhone
  • Connect to a different network and try to update
  • Plug into your computer with iTunes and update through this method
  • Force restart iPhone
  • Restore and reset iPhone

It is also important to note that as your phone model becomes older, some updates will not be available.

Overall, iPhones are extremely reliable and smoothly operating smartphones that millions of people use worldwide. Their simple layout, yet exceptional quality is why so many people are drawn to them!
